Former Hong Kong activists wait eagerly as Ottawa begins approving asylum claims | Carihargater

A household that fled Hong Kong fearing persecution is hoping their asylum claims can be accepted by the Canadian authorities as Ottawa quietly begins granting refugee standing to pro-democracy activists.

The household, now based mostly in Vancouver, fled Hong Kong in late December. The daddy interviewed by Carihargater fled to Canada after months of protests in Hong Kong, which had been sparked by a proposed extradition invoice that signified a seeping of affect from mainland China over the semi-autonomous area.

Refugee standing

Immigration lawyer Robert Tibbo says Hong Kong activists have a really robust case to say asylum, notably after China handed a nationwide safety legislation earlier this summer time. The legislation makes secessionist, subversive or terrorist actions unlawful.
