NASA is naming its Washington headquarters after Mary Jackson, the area company’s first African American feminine engineer whose story was portrayed within the well-liked movie Hidden Figures.

Jackson began her NASA profession in 1951 as a part of a segregated unit of feminine mathematicians at what’s now Langley Analysis Heart in Hampton, Virginia. The ladies did calculations in the course of the early pre-computer days of the U.S. area program. Their story was chronicled in a e book and the 2016 movie.

Jackson was later promoted to engineer and retired from NASA in 1985. She died in 2005 at age 83.
